In 1991 I moved to NYC to try to make it as an artist, I ended up forming a jazz band with friends in Brooklyn. This song takes visuals from Alphabet City and Harlem to set the stage for a story of young lovers. In NYC, money may be king, but the underground has always worshiped youth and beauty.
The city was far less tame and more affordable. My people were the countless artists from small towns all over the US who followed their dreams to NYC. We banded together and shared rent in the city’s underbelly. The twin towers still stood, it was a time in my life that shaped everything that came later. Broke kids can often be rich in love.
We should all be so lucky to be in our 20s, hungry, and broke…
Trust me.
